Is PFAS the next up as the environmental issue to hit the oil industry? Consider this PFAS 101 as it provides the foundation for understanding this set of chemicals and what it could mean to the industry. PFAS represents perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or “forever chemicals.” These are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in various consumer and industrial products. More specifically, in the oil and gas industry, these chemicals are used for production, refining, drilling and fracking fluids, and drill bits – think surfactants or other items that have coatings. New EPA and state regulations addressing PFAS are on their way.

After earning her PhD in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Dr. Kaylin McDermett has been with Geosyntec Consultants for nearly three years. She is an experienced researcher in PFAS and manages a variety of environmental remediation projects in soil, groundwater, and other matrices.
